How does the tennis ranking work in Belgium?

All tennis players in Belgium share the same ranking scale, expressed in points, common to both federations (Tennis Wallonie-Bruxelles and Tennis Vlaanderen) united under Tennis Belgium.

In short: the ranking is recalculated twice a year, in May and in October, based on your results from the previous 12 months. Only your 6 best competitions count. The sum of their points is divided by 6, and that total determines your place in the national pyramid.

Last verified: 12 June 2026

What does the ranking ladder look like?

For adults (15 and over), the ladder starts at 3 points for a beginner, moves to 5 points, then climbs in steps of 5 points up to 110 points. The 115-point ranking is reserved for players with at least 10 ATP or WTA points.

It is a pyramid: each ranking corresponds to a fixed percentage of players. For example, around 19% of women and 18.6% of men sit at 5 points, against 0.1% at 110 points. From 95 points upwards, an order number (index) is added to the ranking: it is used to determine tournament seeds and player order in interclub.

Juniors have their own pyramids per age category (under 9, under 11, under 13), with rankings from .8 (beginner) to .1. The very best under-13 players (the top 0.5% of their pyramid) move straight into the adult pyramid with a ranking of at least 30 points.

How are your points calculated?

For each tournament category you enter, you earn the sum of three types of points:

  • Round reached: points based on how far you go in the draw, weighted by the number of entrants (from 60% of the points with 2 or 3 entrants to 110% from 32 entrants).
  • Win bonus: points for every win, based on the ranking value of your opponent.
  • Participation bonus: 2 points per match played, except if you lose your first match.

At calculation time, your 6 best results (tournaments and interclub combined) from the previous 12 months are added up, then divided by 6. If you scored points in fewer than 6 competitions, the total is weighted: 80% for a single competition, 84% for two, 88% for three, 92% for four and 96% for five. Playing regularly pays off.

And interclub, how does it count?

Interclub counts as one competition among your best 6. Your 3 best wins are taken into account: with 3 wins, the points are valued at 100% and divided by 3; with 2 wins, at 80% divided by 2; with 1 win, at 60%. Without a win, your interclub simply does not count, although the matches played do count towards the 2 official matches threshold.

Note: interclub, inter-series and inter-region competitions are always played with the ranking calculated in October, even after the May ranking is published.

How many rankings can you move up or down?

Moving up depends on the number of matches won over the period: no promotion without a win, 1 ranking maximum with 1 or 2 wins, 2 rankings maximum with 3 or 4 wins. From 5 wins and at least 2 competitions, promotion is unlimited. Walkover (WO) wins do not count towards these thresholds.

Going down is limited to 1 ranking per calculation, and a calculated player cannot lose a ranking at two consecutive calculations. However, a player who goes 18 months without playing enough (0 or 1 match) automatically drops one ranking.

When does the new ranking apply?

In 2026, the first calculation takes place in the week of 11 May (results from 12 May 2025 to 10 May 2026) and the second in the week of 28 September (results from 20 October 2025 to 27 September 2026). The new rankings are published at the latest 10 days after the calculation.

Tournaments running during the calculation period are still played with the old ranking. Example for 2026: until Tuesday 26 May, you register for tournaments ending on Sunday 7 June with the October 2025 rankings; from Wednesday 27 May, tournaments ending on 14 June and later are played with the May 2026 rankings.

Frequently asked questions

How many matches do I need for my ranking to be calculated?
You need 2 official singles matches played during the 12-month period. With 0 or 1 match, you are not calculated and you keep your ranking.
What ranking does a new player receive?
A player who joins without a ranking receives the starting ranking of their age category, that is the lowest of the pyramid. If their real level is higher, their club can request an adjusted ranking (assimilation) from their federation.
Does a match won by walkover (WO) count?
Yes, the winner receives the win bonus and participation bonus points. However, those wins do not count towards determining your promotion limit.
Is the doubles ranking separate?
Yes, singles and doubles each have their own ranking and rules. For example, you need at least 4 doubles matches in tournaments over the past 12 months to receive a calculated doubles ranking.
Why can my ranking drop even though I have barely played?
After 18 months without playing enough matches to be calculated (0 or 1 match), you automatically drop one ranking.
